Abandoned as a child and desperate to quit her miserable life as a scullery maid, Catherine Jones takes her fate in her own hands and heads West as a mail order bride. Though not at all sure that any man would want her, Catherine does know that any life would be better than the one she’s known. But when she arrives at her new home—a massive stone mansion and cold-eyed servants—she is filled with doubts. She envisioned a cozy farmhouse, full of love and warmth, and she fears she could never meet the expectations of such a wealthy husband. Meeting her intended, Jedediah Moore, does not do much to settle Catherine’s nerves. Not seen outside the house in years, the reclusive Mr. Moore also seems to want to have nothing to do with his soon-to-be bride. And as Catherine finds herself alone in her strange new world, she begins to wonder if she has made a terrible mistake.
