Abigail Bontrager is a devout young Amish woman who cares for her ailing mother Miriam. She feels happy and secure within her home and Amish community. When her mother’s illness becomes more serious, she and her father Reuben enlist the help of an Englisch Home Nurse Nancy Sinclair, who is willing to assist in the care.
Abigail must go into town on her own because Miriam forgot to tell them Miriam’s prescription needed refilling. On her way home Abigail witnesses the murder of a young boy.
Abigail wrestles with the dilemma of witnessing the crime and the rule that Amish do not go into courtrooms of the Englisch. After consultation with the Bishop and her father she decides she must tell what she saw.
